Hosted vs self-hosted Google Search Console MCP: which should you run?

The question isn't whether you can run an MCP server. It's whether you want to maintain one every time your AI needs GSC data. Hosted AskGSC gives compatible agents 11 read-only tools for €4.99/month. Self-hosting gives you control over the runtime, tokens and possible custom write tools, but adds engineering responsibility.

Choose hosted for repeatable SEO analysis without a server to operate. Choose self-hosted when you need custom tools, your own deployment boundary or the ability to audit and modify the implementation. Neither creates SEO performance: your agent requests evidence, and you still choose the SERPs.

Three decisions before choosing an architecture

Make the decision with the same discipline you apply to SEO: define the job first, then evaluate the evidence.

01

Will your agent call it every week?

For recurring ChatGPT, Claude or Codex GSC questions, a ready remote endpoint can beat managing a new server. Verify the chosen client supports its transport and authentication.

02

Do you need to write into Search Console?

AskGSC deliberately cannot submit sitemaps, request indexing or change properties. Some open-source alternatives expose sitemap writes. Review Google OAuth scope and tool permissions before enabling anything.

03

What happens when credentials expire?

Audit OAuth setup, refresh-token protection, endpoint exposure, log retention, upgrades and revocation. Local does not automatically mean secure; hosted does not automatically mean risk-free.

A realistic founder decision

01 / GSC MCP

Solo founder

You want an AI to compare pages, diagnose lost clicks and decide the next SEO sprint. Hosted is probably simpler when the 11 read-only tools cover the questions.

02 / GSC MCP

Technical SEO team

You require custom indexing workflows, strict deployment location or bespoke tool behavior. Self-hosted can justify the operations budget.

03 / GSC MCP

One-time report

You need one snapshot for a presentation. GSC export may be enough; you may need neither MCP option.

Verify the implementation, not the marketing

Google's OAuth documentation defines read-only versus read/write scopes. Open-source MCP repositories document local installs and available operations. This page compares operating models, not individual providers; the separate MCP alternatives page compares actual projects.

Hosted vs self-hosted: real questions

Data from Search Console is historical and can be delayed. A missing query row is not evidence of zero searches. URL Inspection exposes Google's last-known state, not a real-time crawl; conversions and SEO causality need other evidence.

01Is self-hosting a GSC MCP free?

The code can be open source without a software license fee. Google Cloud OAuth configuration, token security, upgrades and the runtime still cost time; a public deployment can incur infrastructure expenses.

02Is a hosted Search Console MCP less secure?

Neither deployment model is inherently safer. Compare requested Google scopes, token handling, operator access, incident procedures and whether a local or remote connection matches your policies. AskGSC uses read-only GSC access.

03Can AskGSC submit a sitemap or run live URL inspection?

No. Its 11 tools read Search Analytics, stored URL Inspection results and submitted sitemap status. It cannot submit or delete sitemaps, run a live indexing test, edit the site or guarantee better rankings.

Your AI needs answers. You decide who maintains the pipe.

Use a hosted MCP when 11 GSC read-only tools are enough and infrastructure is a distraction. Run your own when the control justifies the work. Either way, put real page/query data before the next SEO bet.
