When clicks and impressions tell different stories

A page can gain impressions and lose clicks at the same time. A generic SEO summary misses that contradiction. Give Claude a specific property, two comparable date ranges and the query–page breakdown. Ask for facts first, hypotheses second and checks last.

From GSC numbers to an evidence-based diagnosis

01

Fix a stable baseline

Choose one property, two complete date windows of equal length and identical search type, country and device filters. GSC's most recent days can be incomplete.

02

Decompose the movement

Find the pages with the largest absolute click losses, then inspect the queries for those URLs. Review impressions, CTR and average position alongside clicks.

03

Decide what to verify

Distinguish changes in query demand and average position from a possible snippet problem. Request a short shortlist of SERP checks before editing.

Questions Claude can answer with your GSC data

Each prompt asks for evidence and a decision. Replace placeholders with an exact authorized siteUrl and URL where applicable.

Use the exact siteUrl returned by the property-list tool. Do not assume missing query rows are zero.

01Investigate a traffic decline

For [PROPERTY], compare the latest complete 28 days with the preceding 28 days by page. Rank the largest absolute click losses, then inspect each leading page by query. Explain which changes are observed and which causes remain hypotheses.

02Unpack falling CTR

For [PROPERTY], find pages whose impressions increased while clicks fell across two equal 28-day periods. Show CTR differences in percentage points and check whether query mix and average position changed.

03Choose the next check

For [PROPERTY], identify three pages with meaningful click losses and stable or rising impressions. For each URL, show the main query changes, one plausible explanation and one manual check before editing.

A declining CTR does not automatically mean a bad title

01

Signal

Impressions rise, clicks fall and average position stays broadly stable.

02

What to analyze

Which query–page pairs account for the change? Did the search terms that triggered impressions shift?

03

What remains unproven

Check live results, search intent and displayed titles before blaming the snippet. Position averages are not an exact rank.

Claude analyzes; AskGSC does not modify your site

AskGSC exposes three read-only tools: authorized properties, Search Analytics queries and period comparisons. It cannot inspect URL indexing, crawl pages, measure Core Web Vitals, publish changes or prove causality. Custom MCP support depends on the Claude client and plan.

Questions worth answering

A practical look at capabilities, reporting boundaries and the MCP connection.

01Do I have to export Google Search Console to Claude?

No. In a compatible MCP client, AskGSC provides your authorized data on demand without spreadsheet uploads.

02Can Claude tell me exactly why traffic declined?

No. Google Search Console shows what moved, not why. Query and page segments support hypotheses that you should validate separately.

03Can Claude edit my Search Console settings through AskGSC?

No. The tools and the Google authorization scope are read-only.

Less dashboard hopping. Better questions.
